چکیده

Conventional microscopy, electron microscopy, and imaging techniques such as MRI and PET commonly generate large stacks of images of the sectioned brain. In other domains, such as neurophysiology, variables such as space or time are also varied along a stack axis. Digital image sizes have been progressively increasing and in virtual microscopy, it is now common to work with individual image sizes that are several hundred megapixels and several gigabytes in size. The interactive visualization of these high-resolution, multiresolution images in 2D has been addressed previously [Sullivan, G., and Baker, R., 1994. Efficient quad-tree coding of images and video. IEEE Trans. Image Process. 3 (3), 327-331]. Here, we describe a method for interactive visualization of multiresolution image stacks in 3D. The method, characterized as quad-tree based multiresolution image stack interactive visualization using a texel projection based criterion, relies on accessing and projecting image tiles from multiresolution image stacks in such a way that, from the observer's perspective, image tiles all appear approximately the same size even though they are accessed from different tiers within the images comprising the stack. This method enables efficient navigation of high-resolution image stacks. We implement this method in a program called StackVis, which is a Windows-based, interactive 3D multiresolution image stack visualization system written in C++ and using OpenGL. It is freely available at http://brainmaps.org.

Visualization of 3D Scientific Data Based on Interactive Clipping

We have exploited clipping in combination with multiresolution rendering to visualize large-scale threedimensional (3D) scientific datasets. Our interactive clipping approach involves the dynamic manipulation of a clip plane to expose any cross-section of a given volume data and the subsequent adjustment of the clipped surface to the best view position. The data are rendered as stacks of 2D tex...

Data structures for 3D multi-tessellations: an overview

Multiresolution models support the interactive visualization of large volumetric data through selective refinement, an operation which permits to focus resolution only on the most relevant portions of the domain, or in the proximity of interesting field values. A 3D Multi-Tessellation (MT) is a multiresolution model, consisting of a coarse tetrahedral mesh at low resolution, and of a set of upd...

BigDataViewer Visualization and Image Processing for Terabyte Data Sets

The necessity to make large volumetric datasets available for interactive visualization and analysis has been widely recognized. However, existing solutions build upon proprietary file formats requiring that data are copy-converted before visualization, or use dedicated servers to generate virtual slices that are transferred to client applications, practically leading to insufficient frame rate...

A First Step to Evaluate and Compare Multiresolution Models

A variety of multiresolution models for arbitrary triangle meshes have been presented in the last years. In order to achieve an interactive visualization, multiresolution models must store and retrieve data efficiently. In this paper, we present a first step to evaluate and compare multiresolution models. We propose a set of tests to measure the speed performance of the models for interactive v...

Building generic anatomical models using virtual model cutting and iterative registration

BACKGROUND Using 3D generic models to statistically analyze trends in biological structure changes is an important tool in morphometrics research. Therefore, 3D generic models built for a range of populations are in high demand. However, due to the complexity of biological structures and the limited views of them that medical images can offer, it is still an exceptionally difficult task to quic...
